Excited that we had a yard again, we were ready to build our new shed. However, before Husband could make any headway on the project, we needed to remove the massive laurel stumps from our backyard.

Having never personally removed stumps before, I was at a loss for how we were going to make this happen. Husband didn’t really need my expert advice on stump removal; however, because he had already come up with a plan. We were going to rent a stump grinder.

You might ask, like me, what exactly a stump grinder is. Well, it’s simple really. It’s a big machine that (you guessed it) grinds down a stump.

It works by grinding the stump into little tiny pieces, oscillating back and forth until the stump is effectively sawdust. Husband described it as playing a Nintendo game. I found the entire process quite exhilarating.

So with our latest machinery in place, we got to work. I set off in the backyard sawing the laurel hedges down a bit in preparation for the grind, while Husband tested the beast out in the front yard on an innocent stump that had been sitting there for years.

The thing worked like magic.

Husband even let me take the hog for a spin…

Just grindin' away

I would have never thought I could have so much fun doing yard work! After a few short hours, we removed all the stumps and said our last goodbye to the horrible laurel hedges.
